interzone: Media arts in Australia

Media arts have become the most public and accessible form of inquiry into the interface between society, culture and technology. The impact of digital technologies has been profound and new disciplines of inquiry have emerged over the last twenty years in response to the overall “computerisation” of society. Media artists are at the forefront of this inquiry in both their use of new media and their aesthetic exploration of its effects.
interzone presents the first comprehensive overview of the development of media arts culture in Australia. It critically discusses the work of established and emerging media artists and the contexts out of which their work has developed.
interzone explores, through the work of more than 70 artists, the emergence of key concepts such as interactivity, interface and immersion. It is wide-ranging in its attention to aesthetic forms that have developed in relation to computer-based media, such as net art, virtual reality environments, digital video, multimedia installation and interactive fiction.

interzone will be published in November by Thames & Hudson Australia.

One Flew Over the Duck

During Mental Health Week 2005, The Arc Group has put together an art exhibition showcasing works by people living with a mental illness which germinated from the 2004 Biennale of Sydney. After collaborating with Venezuelan artist Javier Tellez on 2 films screened during the Biennalie, women from the film have worked to establish an arts-based recovery program run. Javier Tellez is well known as an artist whose genre explores the issues of mental illness. Whilst in residence at Sydney Collage of the Arts Javier filmed the moving “12 & a marionette” and “Jeanne d’Arc” on the grounds of Rozelle Psychiatric Hospital. We collaborated on these films which realises the issues of women, institutionalization, stigma & mental illness.

We are known by the system as “consumers” but prefer to define ourselves as peers (people experiencing extraordinary realities).

A keen supporter of the films, Elizabeth Ann Macgregor: Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, will open the week long exhibition.

On opening night performances will include spoken word, slides, poetry and the “sex-mental” safe sex awareness show. Tuesday night will see the re-screening of the two films “12 & a Marionette” and “Jeanne d’Arc”. On Friday night the Bosoms for Breasts auction of painted bras will be profoundly hysterical as we raise awareness & monies for Breast Cancer Network Australia.

The exhibition will be held at the Knot Gallery 107/ 342 Elizabeth Street , Surry Hills entry is free except for the $5.00 cover charge for the film night. The exhibition will be open from 12- 6pm on the weekend of the 15th/ 16th October 2005.

At the McCord Museum from November 25, 2005 until April 2, 2006

An exhibition exploring historic representations of girlhood from the 1860s to today, Picturing Her — Images of Girlhood opens this fall at the McCord Museum in Montréal.

Picturing Her demonstrates the historic roots of these discussions and raises still more questions about the modern cultural assumptions that surround the idea of “girl.” Drawing on the McCord Museum’s extensive historic art holdings as well as contemporary artworks, guest curator Dr. Loren Lerner, Chair & Professor of Art History at Concordia University, considers the definition of girlhood and traces ho
